Awards such as these are a recognition for our people.”

The War Museum received the Award of Outstanding Achievement in Exhibitions for Afghanistan: A Glimpse of War. This exhibition, which opened in spring 2007 and is scheduled to close on April 27, 2008, provides visitors with compelling images and first-hand accounts of Canada’s involvement in the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has already attracted more than 185,000 visitors, making it the most popular special exhibition since the new Museum opened in May 2005.

The Museum of Civilization was also recognized with the Award of Outstanding Achievement in Conservation, for its ongoing restoration of a rare birchbark canoe belonging to the National University of Ireland in Galway. Since May 2007, conservators at the Museum have been undertaking the painstaking conservation of the six-metre Maliseet watercraft, possibly the oldest canoe of its kind in the world. For several months last summer, visitors were invited to observe the conservation process and speak to staff about its history and significance.

Also recognized by the CMA was Dr. Stephen Inglis, who received the Award of Distinguished Service, recognizing the lifetime contribution of individuals to Canadian museums throughout the course of their careers. Formerly Director-General of Research and Collections at the Museum of Civilization, Dr. Inglis is now Senior Curator. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Art History at Carleton University, and for over 30 years, has been associated with the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, which promotes academic and cultural exchange between India and Canada. Throughout his career, Dr. Inglis has chaired conferences and lectured around the world on crafts, South Asian culture and museology.
