Petra’s amazing Great Temple as seen by renowned archaeologist Dr. Martha Sharp-Joukowsky
Gatineau, Quebec, September 11, 2006 — On Sunday, October 1, the Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to meet archaeologist Dr. Martha Sharp-Joukowsky, expert on the Great Temple of Petra, one of the city’s major archaeological and architectural components and the largest freestanding building ever excavated there. Dr. Sharp-Joukowsky will talk about the history of the Great Temple, which dates back to the first century B.C., and how it was used for different purposes over the years before disappearing beneath the desert sands.Dr. Martha Sharp-Joukowsky is a professor of archaeology, director of the Brown University Center for Old World Archaeology, former president of the American Institute of Archaeology, and leader of the Great Temple excavation. She and her team have been working on the excavation for the past 14 years, and the project has produced 387,000 artifacts. They recently discovered a Roman bath complex, evidence of the influence of Roman rule over Petra.
