Nomadic peoples followed the large herds of buffalo as they moved from one place to another. In the winter, they usually withdrew to wooded areas, where the buffalo found refuge. In the spring, they returned to the prairies, following the migration of the buffalo, which gathered in immense herds in search of pasture. Plains Indians sometimes hunted other types of large game, including moose and deer, especially when they withdrew to wooded areas in the winter.
