The life of the nomadic Plains Indians revolved around the buffalo. Most of the parts of the animal were used by the families. Meat that was not eaten right away was cut into very thin strips and dried in the sun. Buffalo hide was used to cover tepees, and to make clothing, shields for the warriors and cooking containers. The bones, the nerves, the horns and the hooves were transformed into tools and all sorts of household objects. Not even the dung was wasted; once dried, it was used as cooking fuel in areas where there were very few trees.
