The elderly, young mothers, children and a few warriors, who protected the village, stayed behind. For centuries, dogs, which pulled travois, were the only pack animals. As a result, the distances the Plains Indians could travel and the quantity of goods they could take with them were limited. The horse greatly increased their mobility and made it easier to hunt buffalo, their main source of food.
