When they returned from the hunt, the women harvested the crops and, along with their
families, prepared for the long winter. The sedentary way of life of the Arikara, the
Dakota and the Pawnee was not, however, the most widespread in the Canadian and American
prairies. Most of the other peoples were nomads and travelled vast distances to secure
their food supply. Before the Spanish introduced the horse to the Americas, in the 16th
century, the Plains Indians travelled on foot.
