These nations lived in palisaded villages in dome-shaped dwellings (earth lodges) built of
large posts, beams, straw and earth. There might be 100 to 400 people in the villages,
sometimes twice that. Sedentary peoples subsisted almost exclusively on the edible plants
they cultivated, including corn, squash, beans and sunflowers. In the spring, the women
prepared and seeded the fields. Once or twice a year, in the summer and fall, the men and
women left the villages for a brief period to hunt buffalo.
