Winter was usually the most difficult season of the year, when the Algonquians had to
travel the most. As soon as resources were depleted in an area, men women and children
packed up and headed for another region. If there was a shortage of big game, life could
become difficult. Members of the hunting groups scattered throughout the territory
sometimes died of starvation, but there were apparently only isolated cases of famine.
