The Businessman on the River

Murdoch MacKenzie filled a void between wealthy camp members and the hired help, being both a camp owner and a guide with an outfitting service. He was not alone. Others took the same opportunity to profit from a growing tourist industry by establishing camps with these attendant services. The accommodations, while not luxurious, were affordable to the growing number of in- and out-of-province tourists who came to the rivers in the first quarter of the twentieth century. MacKenzie himself started out early in the century and by the 1920s had established several camps on the North Branch, Main Southwest Miramichi River, Carleton County.

Seventeen foot wood and canvas canoe believed to have belonged to Murdoch MacKenzie
This is an early canvas model, probably built in New Brunswick by an independent maker around the turn of the century. The hardwood strips or "shoes" on the bottom protected the hull from rocks and other objects in the shallow North Branch, Main Southwest Miramichi.
