While the Treaty of Paris transferred France’s North American territories to Britain, the Royal Proclamation that followed was the plan for the administration of those colonies then under British rule. It provided for the establishment of colonial governments and also created the framework for the eventual negotiation of First Nations treaties. In an attempt to stabilize relations with First Peoples, the proclamation also forbade settlement west of the Appalachians. The Royal Proclamation represented the first step by the Crown toward recognition of Aboriginal title.
