Charles de Gaulle uttered his famous words, “Vive le Québec libre,” on July 24, 1967. Lester B. Pearson’s government was shocked, and made its displeasure clear. De Gaulle departed shortly afterwards for France without this box, which the Canadian government had originally intended to present to the French president.
