The first telegraph message transmitted in Canada was sent from Toronto to Hamilton on December 19, 1846. It was the birth of an industry crucial to the country’s development. Long before emails and text messaging, our forebears transmitted instant messages over long distances by telegraph. These messages were sent in Morse alphabet. This device, dating from the mid-19th century, received Morse code signals.
