Magistrate’s robe
This robe was supposedly worn by magistrate Hugh Richardson when he presided over the trial of Louis Riel for high treason in July 1885. Found guilty by a jury, the Métis leader was sentenced to death by Richardson. Riel was hanged in Regina on November 16, 1885.
Donated by the family of Gerald Sydney Halter, Aubrey J. Halter and Rachel Diana Halter, Winnipeg.
