Unlike the northeastern agricultural peoples, these nations could harvest crops twice a year, in the summer and the fall. They usually produced enough food for themselves and to trade with other nations. Several southeastern groups also hunted. Fallow deer was the preferred game of the peoples of this vast region, but they also captured other species, including bears, raccoons, alligators, hares, turkeys and quails.
