Some nations, like the Creek, spent most of the year in long rectangular gabled
houses.Others, like the Seminole of the subtropical region, lived in huts without walls
that were covered with palm leaves. With the exception of the Calusa who lived in Florida,
who were hunters, fishermen and gatherers, the southeastern Indian peoples practised
agriculture, cultivating corn, beans, squash and sunflowers. Some groups, like those who
lived along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, also cultivated sweet potatoes, peas,
watermelons and fruit.
