There were up to 350 people in some Illinois communities, for example, so the total population must have been in the thousands. When they left the villages to go hunting, the southern Algonquians usually lived in huts covered with reed mats. They usually hunted from the end of September to the end of December. The elderly, young children and anyone with decreased mobility remained at camp while the men and women went on long hunting expeditions lasting two or three months. The Algonquians hunted mainly deer, buffalo, bears and turkeys.
