Door painting
Tanjore District, Tamilnadu
Paint and gold leaf on wood
Collection of Mme Thérèse Dion
This two-sided architectural fitting features Gajalaksmi
– the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, being ritually bathed
by elephants. Paintings of Hindu themes, embossed and with surfont family
decorations, are popular in homes, temples and prayer halls in
southern India. The Raju community of Tanjore became expert in
this style, giving it its name.
