Becoming Danish again was an easy decision for most people—they had always seen themselves as Danes. This identity endured even as the Germans forbade the use of Danish in schools during the late 1800s and conducted all official business in German.

From Germany to Denmark:
Spandet, 1864 to 1920

During the First World War, young men from South Jutland were drafted into the German army. Every family in the region was affected by the war, and many young men who came back alive suffered from "shell shock," known today as post-traumatic stress disorder.
