This is, indeed, one of the decisive factors in a colony\u2019s survival. But who were these men and women who decided to come to America to start a new life, or who were sent with no choice in the matter? Knowing who the colonists were and where they came from provides a better understanding of the development of this civilization and this new culture, which have survived to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>When talking about the settlement of New France, we often evoke the filles du roi, or the \u201cking\u2019s daughters,\u201d the young women sent by Louis XIV and his Minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert to marry bachelors already settled in the colony. However, many other people left their country for New France. In the following article, Leslie Choquette reveals everything about the colonists. Who were they? Where did they come from? How many were there? How old were they? What were their trades?
