St. Onuphrius Church

St. Onuphrius Church is a consecrated Ukrainian Catholic church, and a testament to how newcomers to Canada adapted and reaffirmed important traditions in establishing communities on the Prairies.

Over 170,000 Ukrainians came to Canada between 1891 and 1914. Like many immigrant groups, they strove to adapt and maintain their distinctive cultural, linguistic and religious traditions in Canada. Built in 1915 and renovated sporadically over the next 50 years, St. Onuphrius provided a space where the Ukrainians living in Barich (near the town of Smoky Lake, northeast of Edmonton), Alberta, could follow the devotional practices and the liturgical cycles that continued to structure their lives. It was dismantled, moved and rebuilt in this Museum in 1996. The church is still used for religious services today.
