Sheraton Chest of Drawers

This chest is a product of an English community that existed in Quebec during the early 1800s. The Sheraton influence, with the scalloped base and lightly flared French feet, is understated. The sides and top are made of white pine and are dovetailed together to meet at right angles, a form that was uncommon in Canada. The richly figured grain of the wavy birch and bird’s-eye maple is concentrated at the front of the chest for maximum visibility. The brasses, locks and brown varnish stain on the top and sides are original.
