The variety of patterns that could be woven on jacquard looms led to decreased demand for the traditional geometric patterns woven on the conventional multiple shaft looms. This coverlet, woven on a jacquard loom for Caroline Oill in 1846, is the exception because of the geometric pattern contained within the border. The type of bird seen along the border is the thistle finch (distelfink in German), which was a popular motif in the Pennsylvania German community — representing happiness and good fortune.
