Chippendale Tall Chest of Drawers

The design of this chest is directly patterned after the Pennsylvania Chippendale tall chests of the late 1700s. It is a form rarely found in Canadian furniture. This example was found in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1970 and shares several design and construction features with other early 1800s Niagara case pieces. The well-proportioned drawers, quarter columns, reeded frieze and detailed mouldings add to its stature. Research into the remaining original brass pulls supports the view that it was made in the Niagara Region around 1815.
