Sofa Table

Thomas Nisbet was one of Canada’s most important and accomplished cabinetmakers. Many of his early furnishings, such as this sofa table, rank among the best made in Canada. After emigrating from Glasgow, Scotland (in 1811), Nisbet set up shop in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1813. He continued in business until shortly before his passing in 1850. This table combines excellence in design and artisanship as evidenced by the carving on the turned columns and lower frame. The richly figured mahogany top features carefully selected mahogany veneer. Nisbet’s label as maker is attached to the interior of one drawer.
