This thought-provoking session examines Canada’s role and responses to the current global refugee situation. Exploring the crisis against a backdrop of rising anti-immigrant political and populist movements around the world, a group of policy makers, academics, and refugee advocates discuss Canada’s potential role, both at home and abroad. Panellists include Peter Showler, former Chairperson of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada; Naomi Alboim, Distinguished Fellow, School of Policy Studies, Queen’s University; Emilie Coyle, Director, Refugee Sponsorship Support Program of the University of Ottawa’s Refugee Hub; Janet Dench, Executive Director of the Canadian Council for Refugees; Mitchell Goldberg, President of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers; and Dr. James Trepanier, Curator of Post-Confederation Canada, Canadian Museum of History.
