An Evening With Jeremy Dutcher

A new series of inspiring talks and performances featuring some of Canada’s most fascinating personalities.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of conversation and music with award-winning operatic tenor and composer Jeremy Dutcher. Following an exploration of Canadian Museum of History archives, in 2018 Dutcher brought his ancestors’ voices to life on his award-winning debut album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (“Our Wolastoq Songs”).

“If you lose the language, you’re losing an entire distinct way of experiencing the world,” the classically trained musician has said. Using rare wax cylinder recordings collected from his Wolastoq community in the 1900s, Dutcher rearranged traditional songs to create a shape-shifting blend of classical, traditional, and pop music.

Dutcher and moderator CBC journalist Jorge Barrera will also explore the importance of preserving traditional songs in this UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages.
