- Caption Civil uniform coat, Levée Dress
- Additional Information Single-breasted, midnight blue Levee Dress civil uniform coat with tails, stand collar and long cuffed sleeves. Collar and cuffs are made of black velvet, with gold metallic thread-embroidered oak leaf motifs within a saw edging; similar embroidery on the false pocket flaps attached to the back sides and oval patch at centre back. Lined with black silk quilted about chest area; deep pockets interior tails. This coat is part of the civil uniform belonging to the Honourable Frank Smith (1822-1901), who was a member of the Senate (1871-1900), Privy Council (1882), Minister without portfolio (1882-1891; 1892-1896), Minister of Public Works (1891-1892), and was named Knight Bachelor (1894). It has been identified as a Civil Uniform 2nd Class, Levee Dress, as worn primarily by Lieutenant Governors and Members of the Queen's/King's Privy Council for Canada (Cabinet Ministers). This one dates from before 1900 since those that were made post 1900 have the squared collar and wider cuff decorations.
