- Additional Information White cotton, (a) infant's dress and (b) petticoat, hand-sewn with machine-stitched tucks. Tatted lace inserts and edgings and rows of tucks decorate the dress and petticoat. (a) Dress: Bodice: short puffed sleeves with tatted lace edging; front 'V'-opening filled in with rows of tatted lace; lapel-like edging to either side of the opening decorated by feather stitching and edged with tatted lace. Long back opening extending into skirt closed by a tie at the neck and waist and by two buttons on the bodice. Skirt: gauged and sewn to the bodice; decorated around bottom-half by series of alternating tucks and tatted lace: nine tucks, tatted lace, five tucks, tatted lace, five tucks and wide hem. (b) Petticoat: wide cotton waistband, skirt gathered into waistband. Lower section decorated similarly to dress with three tucks, tatted lace, and four tucks; narrow hem with tatted lace edging around bottom edge. This dress and petticoat were made by Mrs. Thomas Mackenzie of River John, N.S. This was made for Mr. Harris's mother and her brothers and sisters, circa 1860. (It was noted that there was similarity between this gown and catalogue number A-6003. The reason may be that there were MacKenzies on both sides of the family and that the pattern may be one that was passed down from one family to the other.)
