- Additional Information English-style dress made of fine, banded cotton that has been woodblock-printed in pattern of diagonal, saw-tooth-edged white stripes with florets in lattice; brown ground with polychrome flower spray repeat. Selvedge-to-selvedge is 86.0 cm. Dress has a short bodice with open fronts, drawstrings at the waist from side seams, and tabs at back for belt; lined with white cotton tabby. A tie at centre front forms a deep 'V' neckline. Back of the dress is cut in three pieces. Sleeves are full at shoulders, and taper to narrow open wristbands. Skirt is cut with a short drop front from a selvedge-to-selvedge length, and gathered to narrow band at top with long tie at each end. Back is made of two selvedge-to-selvedge lengths gathered to bodice. There are three lines of wadding around the hem, and a wadded tuck above it; pocket slits; belt is missing. This dress has been dated the second half of the 1820s, and was worn by a member of the Nairne family. Wadded hems like this were worn in the second half of the 1820s; drop fronts were worn throughout that decade.
