- Additional Information Strong white cotton twill, selvedge to selvedge, 87.5 cm. Bodice is fitted with two darts at front; centre back opening has two thread buttons; wide waistband with two pairs of tapes at back. These join to form singles which tie at centre front; the tape on the left threads through a slot at right of centre back, where it forms an overlap. Dress has a wide neck with a drawstring; short sleeves set in armholes with cording; narrow eyelet embroidery edging around neck and sleeves; full skirt closely gathered to waistband; deep hem with tuck above. Inscription penned in black ink. The marking suggests that this was one of four similar dresses, perhaps worn in a convent, but the date of the dress and age of Kate Leslie do not match. Maria Katharine Leslie later became Mrs. John McNicol Nairne; she was born March 22, 1809, and married on October 7, 1841. This garment came from the Manor House at Murray Bay, Quebec, which belonged to the first Seigneur, Col. John Nairne. (This would have been worn under a dress such as catalogue number A-2504, to which it may well belong.)
