- Additional Information A hand-sewn, single-breasted, shawl-collared man's waistcoat; made of printed Marseilles (piqué) cotton fabric from the 1840's. Foreparts are of finely-textured diamond weave piqué on a purple background printed with an all-over pattern of serpentine vines with stylized Virginia creeper leaves in white, some with tan shading; white cotton twill back. Shawl collar has been pieced in at the centre back of the upper collar and has a white cotton twill under-collar and stand at centre back. It has a closure of five worked buttonholes and five small, flat, self-covered wooden (to be verified) buttons with flax thread shanks; welt pocket each side with cotton twill pocket bag. It has gently sloping and slightly curved lower front edges which form a point at centre front when buttoned; foreparts are lined with white cotton twill; back made of a double layer of white cotton twill. At centre back waistline area is a 5.0 cm wide inset of white cotton twill which gradually expands to 9.0 cm at centre back neck area; two wide linen tapes to adjust the fit are sewn, one above the other, on each side. . This waistcoat has been altered to make it larger. It is possible that the fabric that forms the alteration in the centre back upper collar area came from the under-collar area. Written in black ink on the inside right lining is 'John Nairne'. According to dating information associated with this garment, the John Nairne who could have worn this waistcoat is John McNicol Nairne, whose grandfather was Colonel John Nairne, the first Seigneur of Murray Bay. (The fabric of this waistcoat is the same type as that of catalogue number A-2493.)
