- Inscription (front/en devant) No. 20. The Manger where Christ was born, as it/is today. (reverse/revers) THE MANGER, CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY/The Grotto is about 40 feet long by 12 feet wide and 10 feet/high. It is lighted by 32 lams, belonging to the different sects./The walls of the cave are covered by heavy rich embroidered hang-/ings. Under the alter a silver star marks the place of the birth/of Christ. On the South side, three steps descend into the small/Chapel of the Manger. The cavity is now lined with marble. This/Manger is guarded night and day by Turkish soldiers, who are on/guard to prevent vandalism. When the soldier on guard is re-/lieved, the one who replaces this soldier must, candle in hand, in-/spect everything and see that every lamp and cord and even nail/is in place and report the same before he takes charge of the/Manger. Several disputes between the Greek and Roman church/have come up regarding the possession of the Manger, and it is/on that account that a neutral guard of Turkish soldiers has been/placed there by agreement with the two sects./The Manger, as it is today./Die Rippe, wie fie heute ift./La crèche tell qu'elle est aujourd'hui./El Pesebre como está Hoy./Xlobek obecnie.
