- Caption Measuring and Defining Tools
- Additional Information Great work, whether monumental in scale or tiny and intricate, requires precision measurements. The plumb line, rule, level, square, and chalk line, for example, were extensively used by the ancient Egyptians. The calliper and divider were known to both the Greeks and the Romans. The compass only dates back to the Italian Renaissance, making one of its earliest appearances in the notes of Leonardo da Vinci. - Caption Spirit Level
- Additional Information The spirit level, a sealed glass tube containing alcohol and an air bubble, originated in 1661. However, it only became a carpenter's tool after factory-produced levels appeared in the mid-nineteenth century.
