- Additional Information Midnight blue, straight leg, Civil Uniform trousers, cut higher at front than back; gilt oak leaf lace (two inch width) sewn down outer side seam of pants. Button fly front closed by black buttons stamped with 'Saunders / Toronto'. Trousers have a bound waistband, white striped cotton facing, a bound pocket at right front, six metal suspender buttons about outer waistband, and an adjustable back belt. These pants are part of the civil uniform belonging to the Honourable Frank Smith (1822-1901), who was a member of the Senate (1871-1900), Privy Council (1882), Minister without portfolio (1882-1891; 1892-1896), Minister of Public Works (1891-1892), and was named Knight Bachelor (1894). It has been identified as a Civil Uniform 2nd Class, Levee Dress, as worn primarily by Lieutenant Governors and Members of the Queen's/King's Privy Council for Canada (Cabinet Ministers).
