This alliance was followed by several military campaigns over a period of over 50 years. The expeditions conducted by the French in 1736 and 1739 eventually led to a peace agreement in 1740. In the meantime, a short but bloody war erupted between French settlers and the Natchez in the Mississippi Valley. Relations between the two groups were excellent at first, but they began to deteriorate in 1716 when Fort Rosalie was built near the village of La Pomme.
