Towards the close of the nineteenth century, many households possessed porcelain that was hand-painted by a family member. It was a fashionable pastime for young women to paint porcelain, and many learned the skill through courses, some of which were given by professionals trained in Staffordshire. Brothers James and John Griffiths were among the most highly reputed of these.
