Pattern name: Canadian Sports; maker: John Marshall and Co.; Borrowstounness, Scotland; ca. 1885; transfer printed earthenware with colour added. CMC A-4149, A-4150

In the 1880s, Canadians looking for the unusual in ceramic decoration occasionally opted for Scottish earthenware printed with scenes of Canadian sports and recreations, such as lacrosse (Canada's national game), tobogganing, snowshoeing, skating, etc.

Colour was sometimes added over the printing. The scenes appearing on these inexpensive wares were taken from Christmas and New Year's cards published in Montreal.
