Boer War Artillery Piece

CWM 19650082-001

This British-made 12-pounder field gun was used by the Royal Canadian Field Artillery in the South African War (1899-1902). A superior force of attacking Boers made repeated attempts to capture this gun and a companion piece at the Battle of Leliefonten on 7 November 1900. Three members of the Royal Canadian Dragoons – Lieutenants R.E.W. Turner and H.Z.C. Cockburn and Sergeant E.J.G. Holland – won the Victoria Cross by successfully keeping these guns in Canadian hands. The gun shown at left was brought back to Canada and was later put on display in the Canadian War Museum's galleries.
