This Web module is partly funded by Canadian Culture Online (CCO), an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage. One of CCO's objectives is to connect Canadians with their diverse heritage through a collaborative approach to presenting key collections online from Canada's federal, cultural heritage institutions.

Canadian Culture Online / Culture canadienne en ligne

The texts are mainly extracts from an autobiographical account by Marius Barbeau written in 1958-59 which deal with his childhood and student life as well as from the transcription of a 1965 Radio-Canada interview about his career. This transcription was published in the Oracle series (1982 - no.44) of the National Museum of Man, to coincide with the 1983 exhibition, "I Was a Pioneer", devoted to the life and works of Marius Barbeau.

With concern for the authenticity and respect for the original texts we have retained, in these pages, expressions which were used during that period though they are no longer in use today. This is true for the terms "savage" and "Indian" which, in current usage, have been replaced by "Aboriginal".
