Hoping to change the luck that had plagued him with three broken bones in as many years, Richard asks to change his player number from 15 to 9 (in honour of his recently born first child, daughter Huguette, who weighed 9 pounds at birth). He scores his first NHL goal wearing the new number in Boston on November 21, 1943.
