The Bourque House
137 Notre-Dame-de-l'île Street
For 71 years, Joseph Bourque's family and his descendants lived in this Second Empire style house. This contractor built most of Hull's main public buildings and schools, and several federal buildings, as well as the École des hautes études commerciales business school in Montreal. After serving as an alderman in Hull from 1903 to 1911, he became its mayor from 1914 to 1916. His daughter Alexina and his son-in-law Louis de Gonzague Raby, County Registrar, then took over the family home. Their son, Oblate Father Louis Raby, who worked at the University of Ottawa, left his mark on the capital's student community and the poor.
