Completes a five-year apprenticeship in a general store.

Emigrates to Canada.

Marries Margaret Wilson Beattie, with whom
he has eight children.

1869
Opens a dry goods store at 178 Yonge Street,
Toronto.

1883
Moves to purpose-built premises at 190–196 Yonge Street, with 1.6 hectares (four acres) of space.

1884
Launches a mail-order catalogue.

1889
Opens the first Eaton’s factory in his Toronto store.

1905
Opens a store in Winnipeg, launches a mail-order operation in the West and inaugurates the Santa Claus Parade in Toronto.

1907
Dies on January 31 in Toronto.
