Chris was now responsible for job planning, estimating, and costing. Often he supervised a hundred or more sheet-metal workers. His work diaries from that time reflect his increasing responsibilities: They are dense with elaborate labour-costing charts and intricate notes detailing material needs and directions from head office.

By early 1986, Comstock had shut down its sheet-metal plant and began contracting out its sheet-metal needs. After almost seventeen years with Comstock, Chris decided to return to work with his former boss, Bill Sharp, who had opened a new shop, Elmvale Metal Products, where he worked on projects like the Pickering Civic Centre.
