Old Ways: Staying Danish
|
When family and friends got together in the Chapel for the ceremony in the afternoon, the coffin had been closed and decorated with flowers and surrounded by wreaths . . . . At Spandet church more people had come, the entire church was full and the aisle was covered with wreaths and flowers. The priest, who seemed like an understanding and sensible young man, held a short and good speech, and there was beautiful hymn singing – it was the priest’s first funeral in the parish. Mother was then taken by the townsmen and family last short distance to the corner of the churchyard next to Spandetgaard. The grave is next to the place, where brother Ole has lied for so many years. |

This letter is of course meant to congratulate Chris and express the best wishes for your birthday. I’m sure you will have a nice day with your family, and I send my best to them all. Thank you so much for the nice pictures you sent us, they recall all my memories of the wonderful trip I had to Toronto. Give my special love to Carmela, who was so kind to me. Our father is in rather bad condition, but I’m sure he is thinking a lot about you. Thomas and Else Marie has moved to Ribe, and they sometimes visit him. |
