Samuel Mammel, a Roumanian immigrant, came to Canada with his family in 1927, to take up Canadian National Railways land in Hanna, Alberta. A year later, a CNR agent photographed him in his wheat field.

 





The Mammel family in their vegetable garden, 1928. Shortly after these photographs were taken, the onset of the Great Depression put an end to railway recruitment of European immigrants.
