Le pene dell’emigrante
Vi ho cantato le pene e i tormenti
Della vita dei nostri emigranti
Lor che lascian la chiesa ed i santi
Per cercare un lavoro lontan
Come foglie d’autunno nel vento
Son portati in paesi lontani
Quando vecchi ormai son diventati
Pensan quindi di poter tornar
Nel paese i nostri emigranti
Non han pane per poter mangiar
Non han letto per poter dormire
Non han terra dove lavorar
Se ne vanno così per il mondo
E sperando poi di ritornare
Per potere una volta baciare
Quella terra che devon lasciar
E piangendo con lacrime amare
Nel partire lor si spezza il cuore
Ma nessuno ha pietà del dolore
E nessuno comprender potrà
Da lontano non posson scordare
Una chiesa, una strada, una casa
E nel cuore hanno sempre presente
La speranza di poter tornar
The Suffering of the Emigrant
I have sung to you of the suffering and torment
Of the lives of our emigrants
Those who leave their church and saints
To look for work far away
Like autumn leaves in the wind
They are carried to faraway lands
When they become old
They think of going back
At home, our emigrants
Have no bread to eat
They have no bed to sleep in
They have no land to work
So they go out into the world
Hoping to then return
To be able to kiss
The land they must leave
They cry bitter tears
Their hearts breaking as they leave
But no one feels pity for them
And no one can understand
Far away, they cannot forget
A church, a street, a house
And in their hearts there is always
The hope of returning
