La storia dell’emigrante siciliana, Parts 1 and 2

PRIMA PARTE

Dopo tanta lontananza siam tornati tutti insieme

SECONDA PARTE

E trascorsero tre anni sempre insieme a lavorare
Eravamo assai felici, proprio nulla ci mancava

Certe volte io piangevo e pensavo a mamma mia
Lei mi disse, “Figlia mia, voi starete in casa mia”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The Story of the Sicilian Emigrant Woman

PART ONE

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to tell you all my story as an emigrant
My husband left to go and find work
When he arrived abroad, he found a good job
He felt disheartened, he felt so alone
He wrote to me daily, “Dear wife, my love
Every day I pray to God that you will join me”

Months went by, and his letters kept coming
And so he prepared a house for us
He spoke to me of our children, Salvatore and Carmelina
Only when we were all together would he be happy
And so Christmas came and I sent him a nice package
And I wrote, “Dear husband, soon I will be with you”

And so, the 30th of April, I left my village
And happily departed with little Salvatore and Carmelina
The voyage was long and we were a bit tired
When we arrived, my husband embraced us
It was very moving, he pulled me tight
After so long apart, we were all together again

PART TWO

After four weeks I found a job, too
And the children went to school all day long
And three years passed as we worked together
We were very happy, we had absolutely everything
Often I thought of my mother who was alone
Without her daughter’s help, this couldn’t continue

Sometimes I cried and thought of my mother
And with my husband, we decided to go back
It was the month of December, it was cold when we left
We arrived at the village around Christmas time
My mother was happy to see us all
She said, “Daughter, you must stay at my house”

So it was that with the money he had brought, my husband
Bought some land and built a house
He was a mason and set to work
There was lots of work, and we were able to live well
And we’re happy here, all together with my mother
Living happily among family and friends
