Doukhobors - Spirit Wrestlers

Toil and Peaceful Life

A women's quartet (Natalie Voykin, Anne Chersinoff, Edna Sapriken and Karen Markin) perform on the grounds of the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Museum in Castlegar, British Columbia. The statue of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) in the background commemorates his role as a leading and influential Russian who supported the emigration of thousands of Doukhobors to Canada in 1899.

Ms. Sandra Cuervo of Canora, Saskatchewan composed the words and music to this song.

We are the people who left home one day,
We were told we could no longer stay;
We wanted to worship in our own way
For the kingdom of heaven is within.

Taking another life never seemed right
So we laid down our arms, watched them burn in the night;
Making our way of life, to live and let live,
We were punished for what we believed.

Toil and peaceful life, toil and peaceful life;
With God as our Father, every man as our brother
Let us toil and have peaceful life.

Living in a new land, walking hand in hand
We are joined in the promise of peace;
Sharing our deepened faith with all mankind
May it flourish and ever increase.

Toil and peaceful life, toil and peaceful life;
With God as our Father, every man as our brother
Let us toil and have peaceful life.

Toil and peaceful life, toil and peaceful life;
With God as our Father, let us love one another
Let us toil and have peaceful life.

Let us toil and have peaceful life.
