In 2006, the construction of the Eastmain-1 hydroelectric project created a reservoir of 603 square kilometres in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory. From 2002 to 2005, preventative archaeological research was undertaken in the region within the context of environmental studies initiated by the Société d’énergie de la Baie James and the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Program, based on an agreement with the Cree people. Thanks to an exceptional collaboration between teams of archaeologists, geographers and ethnologists from Arkéos inc. — the selected consultant — and the Cree Regional Authority, a huge amount of work was undertaken.

The research carried out along the Eastmain River led to the excavation of 158 sites, representing a total of five millennia of human occupation. From a broad range of perspectives, the 18 contributions in this book present findings relating to the archaeological materials unearthed as well as the natural environment and cultural history of the area. The pages of this book are transfused with a strong affection for these lands and for the river.
