This platter depicts Thunderbird and Whale, symbolizing the cultural power of the upper and lower worlds. It was carved by Haida artist Charles Edenshaw: 22.7 X 19 cm. The argillite reproduction pieces in high density resin are moulded from casts of original argillite Haida carvings from the Canadian Museum of History’s collections. Argillite is a soft slate found only on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands); it was first quarried in the 1820’s on Slatechuck Mountain.
